Defect-characterized phase transition kinetics

چکیده

Phase transitions are a common phenomenon in condensed matter and act as critical degree of freedom that can be employed to tailor the mechanical or electronic properties materials. Understanding fundamental mechanisms thermodynamics kinetics phase is, thus, at core modern materials design. Conventionally, studies have, large extent, focused on pristine bulk phases. However, realistic exist complex form; their microstructures consist different point extended defects. The presence defects impacts transitions, but has been commonly ignored treated separately. In recent years, with significant advances theoretical experimental techniques, there an increasing research interest modeling characterizing how impact even dictate transitions. present review systematically discusses progress understanding defect-characterized derives key underlying these envisions remaining challenges fruitful directions. We hope discussions insights will help inspire future development field.

Phase transition kinetics in polydisperse systems

The use of moment densities for understanding phase transition kinetics in polydisperse systems is discussed. The role of size partitioning and the distinction between quenched and annealed phase diagrams is emphasised. Polydisperse FloryÈHuggins theory is used as an example, and CahnÈHilliard type equations for the local moment densities are constructed for this model via a random phase approx...

Active Optical Metasurfaces Based on Defect-Engineered Phase-Transition Materials.

Active, widely tunable optical materials have enabled rapid advances in photonics and optoelectronics, especially in the emerging field of meta-devices. Here, we demonstrate that spatially selective defect engineering on the nanometer scale can transform phase-transition materials into optical metasurfaces. Using ion irradiation through nanometer-scale masks, we selectively defect-engineered th...

Topological String Defect Formation During the Chiral Phase Transition

We argue for the existence of topological string defects in chiral sigma models. We discuss the formation of these strings during the chiral phase transitions in the early Universe and in the high energy heavy-ion collisions. Chiral symmetry as well as deconfinement are restored in the core of these defects. Formation of a dense network of string defects is likely to play an important role in t...

Defect model of the smectic A-nematic phase transition

2014 It is shown that phase transitions in three dimensions breaking up an ordered state by polar defect lines can be modelled on the xy model, at least if the interaction of the lines is only steric. The analogy is established for a lattice model by means of a xy high-temperature expansion for spin 1/2. The defect model is applied to the smectic A-nematic transition which is interpreted as a b...

Characterization of the transition from defect to phase turbulence.

For the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation on a large periodic interval, we show that the transition from defectto phase-turbulence is more accurately described as a smooth crossover rather than as a sharp continuous transition. We obtain this conclusion by using a powerful parallel computer to calculate various order parameters, especially the density of space-time defects, the Lyapunov dimensio...
